Sunday 29th January 2012 - Ngutunui Summer Time Trial

Nigel Cross makes it a DOUBLE WAMO by smashing Josh Parkin's previous course record by a full six minutes, so becoming the first human being in the history of the universe to hold the world records for both the WAMOs Insainsbury and Ngutunui time trials at the same time. In his first time on the course Nigel not only made it look easy but his incredible performance brings that sub 1h 40m barrier within reach.
The entire top half of the field across the finish line were all wearing the colours of the Cycology bike shop in Hamilton, so putting a strong Cycology challenge out to the rest of the world for next time.
There were 7male riders and 3 female. The course conditons were good with the weather very cool for this time of the year.
The eleventh man on the day was Ray Long, who did not race in the time trial but who started long before everyone else and did two laps of the course as part of his training for the Rainbow Rage event coming up soon in the South Island. His coach, James Gurney rode in the time trail.
It was a day for PBs which were achieved by Scott Raynes, Connor Dove and Nigel Cross.
The photo above right shows first female Marguerite Ritchie and first male Nigel Cross with their trophies, after finishing.

They're a tough-looking bunch.

A record turnout with a total of 21 participants if you include the two extras who turned out to ride part of the course. It was a mite chilly up on the high mountainside but otherwise perfect conditions, being cold and sunny with only a slight breeze. The usual few sheep on the road to give riders something to dodge. Road conditions were difficult with rocky and loose new gravel on the big descent of Pirongia West Road and deep sludge in places on the Okupata ascent.

Kerry Evans charged in first on his single-speed, with only a minute between him and second place-getter Chris Smith. Brett Purchase (also on single-speed) pipped James Gurney for third in a sprint finish. Annetta Tegel was first woman home and although she was the only female willing to pit herself against such a challenging course, she beat a good number of strong male riders in the process.

In line with ancient tradition, ginger crunch and hot chocolate were consumed at the finish line and there was a cheery gathering in the Persimmon Tree Cafe in Pirongia village afterwards.

This time we actually had a team of volunteer officials which we acquired on the day by press-ganging all available spectators. We had two timing officials who were Rachel Algar and Del Raynes, a real fair dinkum course marshall who was Peter Dove and a photographer/food hander-outer/race starter/chef/MC who was me. Thanks to all of us - we would have been in strife without any one of us.
