All finishers in the first ever Insainsbury Time Trial
All finishers in the inaugural Insainsbury Mountain Time Trial snapped on the finishline

19th January
Notable for a good battle between Jeff and Adrian with Adrian crossing the line first though Jeff had the faster time having started behind.

22nd Dec 2011
The men's world record was smashed by Nigel Cross in his first tilt at this course in a time of 20m 43s. It makes you wonder how long it will be before the 20 minute barrier is broken.

7th Dec 2011
Beautiful evening, warm, still and sunny. Biggest turnout yet for this event with 16 riders from as far away as Otorohanga and Hamilton. Fastest up the mountain was newcomer Connor Dove in a time of 23 minutes flat on a course he had never ridden before. Les McKenzie would've gone faster if he hadn't had 3 phonecalls and a text on the way up.

1st Dec 2011
Seven riders. Good conditions. The WORLD RECORD was broken again by Kerry Evans who broke his own world record set the week before.

24th Nov 2011
A pleasant evening, a little chilly up the mountain with a bit of wind. We had some riders in the "cruising division." These riders leave around 6pm from the pub and cruise up the mountain socially. Seven riders chose to contest the time trial. They included two newcomers in the shape of Kerry Evans and Jackie Orman, both of whom smashed world records. See results chart below.

17th Nov 2011
Nice cool evening. Not as windy as last time. Single track in great condition on the trip down.
Shane Easton thrashed the rest of us as expected. Les McKenzie was the most improved rider taking 3 minutes off his previous best. Digi boy disgraced us by his behaviour in the pub afterwards throwing chips at the pub cat and hitting it on the noggin. Results at bottom of page. Nearly getting to the " spreadsheet needed" stage of results.
Five . . . . four . . . three . . two . . . one . . . Thunderbirds are go (Sorry folks, Insainsbury In-joke)

10 Nov 2011
Beautiful evening. Bit more of a head wind this time and some were confused by the change in start times from 6pm to 6.30pm. But off we went again and it didn't get any easier second time round. Results chart proudly displayed afterwards in the clubrooms-I-mean-pub.

This was the inaugural event - held on Thursday 3rd of November 2011. Brainchild of Jeff Tucker, who had a sleepless night a week or so back and was almost silly enough to wake me up in the wee small hours to rabbit on about this great idea he'd had of having a time trial up Sainsbury road. Fast forward to last Thursday and there I was at the top all dripping with sweat with aching legs agreeing with Shane Oliver that a good name for the event would be, not Sainsbury but Insainsbury.

We had a good turnout of eight riders, seven of whom contested the time trial. The startline was close to the start of Sainsbury Road itself. Jeff took start times and sent the riders off a minute or two apart and then took off himself last.
I Tui, went way early so I could arrive before the fastest riders and be there to record all the finishing times at the top. Thus we two event organisers found a way to organise, promote, officiate and also compete. We even promised to provide double refunds of entry fees to anyone not satisfied with the organisation. Nobody claimed.

Results below show that the first world record holder for the event is Jay Shelgren whose time of 25m 34s put him nearly 4 minutes faster than second placed Austen Heffernan whose time was 29m.11s. Jeff Tucker was only 7 seconds slower for third in 29m18s.
Fastest woman in the world on this course was me, Tui, riding my single-speed since H-town girl was in bike hospital. I hammered all the other women, (none of whom actually turned up for the race) in a time of 36m 30s. Always wanted to hold a world record.
The course was simple. Up the tarseal, up the gravel road, up the 4x4 track to the finishline way up on the high mountainside. Just up up up as I said. No down anywhere.
We were lucky to have Andy on hand with his phone at the ready to snap the entire field at the finish. See pic above - thanks Andy. If you look hard at the ground behind the riders, you'll see some bits of old dried up cutty grass lying there. That's the official finish line. Nothing but the best.
